Weeks earlier, Jimmy Kimmel Live! was halted by ABC for days because of Jimmy‘s ill-received remarks about Charlie Kirk’s fatal shooting and after receiving pressure from the Trump administration and right-wing conservatives to do so.
The incidents left viewers wondering what the future of the late-night talk show would look like, and how much longer Jimmy – a known liberal activist – would continue his over two-decade-long run as host.
Jimmy addressed his hopes for how the show would end during a recent appearance on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast with his wife, Molly McNearney.
He discussed the show’s suspension in September and expressed his fear that he wouldn’t get to go out “on my terms,” as the possibility of a permanent cancellation loomed.

“If I’d not been allowed back on the air, I’d be a martyr,” Jimmy told hosts Glennon Doyle, Abby Wambach, and Amanda Doyle.
“It’s not a terrible position to be in as a comedian, [but] it’s not the position I wanted to be in. And it’s also not the way I wanted the show,” he added.
Jimmy also shared that he and his wife, who is a co-head writer and executive producer of the show, talked about how they would close that chapter of their lives when the time came.
“I want to end it in a graceful way. I want to have a farewell party with our staff. I want to do all those things,” the TV personality said, adding that he wanted to “say the things that I want to say to people.”
Jimmy also said that the thought of everything ending “abruptly, and unjustly, would have been awful. It’s just not how you want it to go.”
Molly also weighed in on how they felt amid the abrupt pause in production and the uncertainty of whether the show would continue.

“An interesting wave, I think we both felt was mourning, right after [the show was suspended]. Because we felt we weren’t coming back and we didn’t have a shot to write our ending the way we wanted to…” Molly confessed.
She then recalled the “strange feeling” they experienced on their last day in the studio before the hiatus.
“When we left here, we didn’t know if we were going to see people again,” Jimmy’s wife revealed.
“We weren’t fired, we were suspended,” Jimmy noted. “And I think suspended means come back, but it just didn’t feel like that to me at the time.”
